Frequently Asked Questions
COMMON CONCERNS INCLUDE:
My neighbor doesn't cut their grass?
Citizens are required to mow their lawns on a regular basis. Grass/weeds cannot exceed a height of six inches on residential properties.
Why do I have to cut the grass along the City street?
In 1998, the City of Lakewood began requiring citizens to maintain their property all the way to the street. The City still maintains the right-of-way along all the major corridors.
The vacant lot next door is never mowed!
Vacant lots do need to be mowed. Weeds and grass cannot exceed a height of twelve (12) inches on vacant lots.
My neighbor has junk all over their property!
Outdoor storage is not allowed on residential properties. Items such as a barbecue grill, patio furniture, and stacked firewood are allowed, but other items such as waste building materials, auto parts, and appliances must be stored indoors.
My Neighbor Has Junk Cars Parked On Their Property!
The City of Lakewood allows up to two (2) junk or unlicensed motor vehicles to be parked on a residential property provided they are parked in the side or rear yard and are screened from public view. All parking areas are required to be improved surfaces such as gravel or asphalt.
My Neighbor Is Parking Their Boat On The Street!
Boats, horse trailers, utility trailers and commercial vehicles are required to be parked on private property. Parking on city streets is prohibited. Again, all parking must be on an improved surface.
My Neighbor Parks Their RV On The Street!
RV's and camping trailers less than twenty-five (25) feet in length may be parked on city streets provided they are operable and currently licensed. Motor homes and travel trailers over twenty-five (25) feet cannot be parked on the city streets. However, RV's and camping trailers can be parked in the driveway, or in the rear or side yard on the property provided they are parked on an improved surface.
My neighbor doesn't clean up after their dog!
Animal feces should not be allowed to accumulate. Residents must cleanup after their pets on a regular basis (we recommend at least weekly). Strong odors and unsightliness are considered violations.
There are trees and bushes overhanging the stop signs and sidewalks!
Street signs and sidewalks must be kept free of obstructions. The Forestry Department at 720-963-5240 responds to these concerns.
My neighbor is running a business from their residence!
A home business is allowed in the City of Lakewood. They are primarily restricted to office uses in residential neighborhoods, and are regulated by the home occupation ordinance.
There is graffiti in my neighborhood!
Graffiti should be removed as soon as possible and should be reported.
