Nov. 15, 2018 – The U.S. Department of Labor has recognized Lakewood for its commitment to recruiting, employing and retaining military veterans with the HIRE Vets Medallion Program Demonstration Award.
The award honors Lakewood for fostering a supportive culture for veterans, reservists and members of the National Guard. Nine percent of the city’s workforce are full-time employees who are veterans, which is more than eight times the national average. Lakewood also holds an annual Veterans Recognition Day and the annual West Metro Veterans Fair, and it provides guard/reserve accommodations for employees.
“Lakewood is committed to providing job opportunities for veterans because it’s the right thing to do. Having veterans as employees also brings a wealth of experience, commitment and dedication to our workforce,” City Manager Kathy Hodgson said.

The Hire Vets Medallion Award highlights job creators who hire and retain America’s veterans in good, family-sustaining jobs. The award is the only federal-level veterans employment award that recognizes an organization’s commitment to veteran hiring, retention and professional development.
