The
Police Explorers program is affiliated with the Boy Scouts of
America, and the Lakewood Police Department sponsors Explorer
Post 226. The Explorer program promotes interest in the law
enforcement field by introducing youths to various aspects of
police work. The program is open to those ages 14 to 21 years
old.
Lakewood
Police agents serve as advisors to the program, and Explorers
learn about community policing, crime prevention, law enforcement
skills and other items through training and riding with police
agents. Explorers also serve as traffic control officers at community
events, assist school resource officers and give tours of the
department to other youth programs.
The
Lakewood Explorer Post also enters Law Enforcement Explorer Tactical
competitions, where judgment, planning and teamwork are evaluated
in events such as mock field raids and hostage situations. The
Lakewood post won top places in a national competition in January
2002 while competing against 31 teams from across the country.
