How to Report a Crime

REPORTING A CRIME TO THE
LAKEWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT

When is it appropriate to call the 911 emergency number?

When calling the 911 number, be sure it is a REAL emergency. The 911 number is strictly for life and death situations and SHOULD NOT be used for asking for information, a telephone number, weather conditions or other items.

The emergency 911 SHOULD NOT be used to report a non-injury accident or a crime that is not happening at the moment, which is called a "cold" crime. Someone’s life could be in danger, and the 911 lines need to be open to handle that call.

Teach your children the proper use of this number and that dailing 911 is not for play or misuse. If you need assistance with teaching your child, contact (303) 987-7105 for information pamphlets.

A dispatcher will return all 911 hang-up calls to be sure there is no emergency. If there is no answer, a police agent is dispatched promptly to investigate.

What is the non-emergency telephone number for Lakewood Police Department dispatch center?

The non-emergency telephone number for the Lakewood Police Department's communications center, also known as dispatch, is (303) 987-7111.  This number is to report a crime that is not active, a traffic accident without injuries and to request an animal control officer.  It is not an information resource. Call the front desk for Police Department related information at (303) 987-7150.

You can now report a crime online - Theft and Misuse of Credit/Debit Cards

You may now use the Online Theft Crime Reporting form for non-emergency and cold case theft reports in Lakewood, or the Online Misuse Credit/Debit Card Crime Reporting for amounts less than $500. You will be assigned a case number for such purposes as insurance reporting.

How can I make a police report by telephone?

The Telephone Reporting Unit (TRU) is on duty 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. The unit's clerks take telephone reports from citizens concerning non-emergency situations such as criminal mischief, criminal trespass and harassment where the suspect is unknown or doesn’t live in the area. To contact the Telephone Reporting Unit, call (303) 987-7150.

How can a hearing-impaired person contact the department?

All desks in the communication center are equipped with TDDs (Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf) for telephone communications with the hearing-impaired community. To use this service in an emergency, call 911. In a non-emergency, call (303) 987-7111.
