The City of Lakewood adopts internationally recognized codes and
local amendments to those codes. The codes provide minimum standards
for materials and installation of electrical wiring, gas, heating,
plumbing, framing and other building components. The codes are developed
through input from experts in all fields of the construction industry
including communities such as Lakewood, designers, builders, manufacturers
and suppliers.
New buildings, remodels, and additions are subject to the codes.
Designers use the codes in planning a project. Contractors follow
the codes during construction. The City contributes during the design
and construction phases of each project to ensure compliance with
the codes.
Any architect or engineer involved in designing a project works
with the City to ensure the intent of each project, the materials
proposed, and the installation desired are consistent with the codes.
When the design is complete, the City issues a building permit to
the contractor. The contractor must be licensed by the City in order
to receive a construction permit.
If you are contemplating a project in your home or business, call
303-987-7500 to receive advice regarding whether a permit is required
and suggestions on proven techniques that may save you time and
money. The same phone number can be used to determine whether a
particular contractor is licensed to operate in Lakewood and whether
a permit has been issued for construction at a particular address.
