Washington Heights Arts Center and Lakewood Cultural Center offer a wide range of art classes and workshops. Well-appointed art studios are available at each location and drop-in studio use is available for registered students in most programs. Pumpkin Carving

Create a superb carved pumpkin under the guidance of a master pumpkin carver! Pumpkins will be illuminated in our plaza for the ‘Grand Lighting Ceremony’ and a spook-tacular photo opportunity. Don’t forget your cameras! Barry Brown All children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Sketching with a Fountain Pen

Would you like to try your hand at sketching and drawing? We will explore and learn how to use a single nib to draw different line widths, how to build texture with dots, dashes and cross hatches. Learn sketching basics and more with a single pen!

Silk Painting One

Explore the basic processes of four silk painting techniques including brushwork with wet on wet on dry approach, metal tipped applicator for resist work, visual texture with salting and water spotting. All materials provided.

Pastel Landscape Painting

Create harmonious landscape paintings through balance and focus on skies and how they work together with the landscape. Bring soft pastels, sketch paper and several sheets of pastel or printmaking paper, reference photos and other pastel supplies. Beginners welcome.

Exploring Mosaic Andamento

Students focus on cutting different kinds of glass and arranging the mosaic tesserae. There will be no grouting. Students are encouraged to bring personal items to use in their designs. No experience necessary.

Intro to Calligraphy: The Italic Hand
1-4 p.m., Saturdays, November 4-18
Lakewood Heritage Center
Calligraphy is a fascinating and absorbing skill. Italic calligraphy is as fresh and inventive today as it was at the time of its earliest origins. In today’s world, the Italic calligraphic hand has many beautiful uses for many contemporary applications. This workshop offers a solid foundation learning the Italic lettering hand. Learn basic Italic letterforms, letter spacing and proper use of calligraphic materials.

Silk Painting Two

Paint a colorful floral design on a silk pillowcase for a unique holiday gift. Experiment on 8mm silk using shibori color resisting with gold foil. We will use liquid silk paints for color and iron the painted surface for color permanence. Jan Janas • Ages 14+
