April 17, 2007:
Traffic detectives from the Lakewood police department are investigating a fatal accident that occurred yesterday afternoon at the intersection of W. Colfax Ave. & Newland Street.

At about 1:00 pm yesterday, witnesses say a Chevrolet van driven by 28-year-old Binti Abdo failed to stop for a red light on westbound Colfax Avenue at the intersection with Newland Street.

The van broadsided a Ford Escort that was southbound on Newland Street, driven by 58-year-old Sandra Gibson. Gibson was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Abdo was also transported and treated for injuries before being released. She was issued a summons for "careless driving resulting in death". Abdo will have to appear in court at a later date.

Detectives continue the investigation and are awaiting test results to determine whether drugs and/or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
