After some 35 years of use, aging plumbing systems have temporarily shut down the popular indoor pool at the City of Lakewood's Carmody Recreation Center. But work has already started to have the pool re-opened by late this fall with better conditions for the pool's many patrons. Regrettably, those patrons face cancellations of some classes and programs during the closure. However, the City's recreation staff continues working hard to provide as many alternate accommodations as possible at the City's other pools. Details will be published, as they become available, here online and in City publications such as Looking at Lakewood and the Community Connection recreation catalog. Details will also be available at the City's recreation centers, along with information about swimming facilities outside of Lakewood. The closure affects only the indoor pool, and none of the other recreation facilities at Carmody Recreation Center, 2200 S. "Old" Kipling St. The outdoor Carmody pool will open this summer for lessons and open swimming. Work on the outdoor pool will be done only after the indoor pool is repaired. Originally constructed in 1972 for the Foothills Park and Recreation District, Carmody pool was one of many parks and facilities transferred to the City of Lakewood as approved by voters in 1998. As one of the few Olympic-length, 50-meter indoor pools in the area, Carmody pool has seen heavy use over the years, not only by recreational swimmers, but also for myriad swimming lessons, swimming competitions and training for swim teams and clubs. Planning and design work to repair problems with the indoor pool's circulation system has begun. Actual construction is expected to begin this summer. Repairs will involve replacing the pool's circulation system with a stainless steel gutter system and more drains. Additionally, the pool filtration system will be overhauled. These repairs will improve water turnover in the pool, help maintain chemical levels and consistent water temperature, and improve water clarity and circulation. New finishes will be applied to both indoor and outdoor pools. More information: 303-987-7800
