Earth Day with the City of Lakewood
Everyone's invited as the the City of Lakewood celebrates
Earth Day 2008 with a variety of events taking place between Saturday,
April 12, and Saturday, April 26.
Saturday, April 19, 8:30am - 1pm, Bear
Creek Lake Park, 15600 W. Morrison Rd.
Volunteers will make the difference by building bridges, restoring habitat,
and constructing and maintaining trails. Mayor Bob Murphy will welcome
volunteers and Great Harvest Bread will provide breakfast.

On Earth Day, Lakewood's Urban Parks division will be giving away free
tree seedlings and seeds. Park staff will be handing out information and
answering questions on water consumption and other landscaping issues.
They will also have perennials on display that will be offered for sale
at the yearly plant sale at the Lakewood greenhouse on Saturday, May 3.
Whole Foods will donate five percent of the total April 22 store sales
to the renovation of Ray Ross Park located at 680 S. Harlan St.

New Energy Economy on the Front Range: Policy, Technology, and Jobs
Join us for a lively discussion regarding what the New Energy Economy
means for Front Range communities. The event will be moderated by Lakewood
Mayor Bob Murphy. Short presentations will be given by the Governors
Energy Office and the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL). Other panelists
will be available to answer more specific questions. The energy panel
features the following speakers:

- Carol Tombari, National Renewable Energy Lab
- Keith Hay, Environment Colorado
- Patrick Keegan, Colorado Energy Science Center
- Ron Lehr, American Wind Energy Association
- Dave Lock, Colorado Association of Municipal Utilities

Technology
April 2 - May 13, various locations, Jefferson County Public Libraries
ArtVentures,
Lakewoods outreach program, will partner with the Jefferson County
Public Librarys Knotts Kids program to create custom-designed
and experiential artwork from natural and found materials. Knotts
Kids will travel to Jefferson County Public Library locations between
April 2 and May 13. On April 12, at the Belmar Library, kids and parents
will build a standing ring made of branches from nearby parks. On April
26, kids and parents will create mobiles from recycled materials at the
Lakewood Library. The pieces will be on display for up to three months
to show the effects of the environment on the artwork.
Over 20 million people participated in the first Earth Day in 1970,
and it is now observed each year by more than 500 million people and national
governments in 175 countries. Celebrate Earth Day with the City of Lakewood,
ArtVentures, Jefferson County Public Library and Whole Foods, and make
a difference in our city, state, country and planet.
