Victim Identified in 6th Avenue Crash

February 14, 2008 -- Lakewood police have identified the driver who died in a head-on collision late last evening, as 78-year-old Maureen Wolfe of Lakewood. Wolfe was eastbound in the westbound lanes of West 6th Avenue and died on scene after a westbound vehicle hit the vehicle she was driving.

At about 8:30pm, the Golden Police Department received a call from a motorist indicating that there was a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of 6th Avenue, between Colfax Avenue (Hwy 40) & Indiana Street.

A head-on collision had taken place before the first responding patrol unit arrived minutes later. The accident scene was located just west of the intersection of 6th Avenue and Simms Street.

Investigators found that a westbound black SUV collided with Wolfe's vehicle in the middle lane. The driver of the SUV was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators do not suspect that alcohol and/or drugs played a role in the accident but will await the coroner's report. The surviving driver of the black SUV has been identified as 52-year-old John Crowley of Golden.
