Did you know that over a quarter of registered Lakewood businesses are home-based? Lakewood has worked hard to ensure our zoning codes support this huge segment of our business population.
Lakewood city codes are intentionally home-based-business friendly. All residential zoning in Lakewood allows for home occupations as an accessory or special use, as long as the business follows the reasonable rules and regulations found in Section 17.4.3.M and N of the Lakewood zoning code (for convenience, scroll to page 92). Those rules include not creating any nuisances that disturb the peace and quiet of your neighbors and not exceeding 25% of the home's square feet.
Despite misconceptions, all home-based businesses, including service businesses, require a Sales or Use Tax License. It is easy to apply and receive your license.
When starting a home based business, you also need to complete our Home Based Business Supplemental Form. This form needs to accompany your Sales or Use Tax license application.
We encourage you to visit our Start a Business page to learn about the resources available as you start your venture.
