Lakewood Celebrates 40th Anniversary with
Tree, Flower & Song Competition

Turning 40 for Lakewood just got a little more fun. Lakewood is calling on those who live, work, go to school or own a business in the city to participate in its competition to name an official tree, flower and song for Lakewood's 40th anniversary.

In June 1969, a diverse array of neighborhoods came together to make themselves into Lakewood. Those who lived in the neighborhoods known as Alameda, Green Mountain, Bear Creek, Applewood and Lakewood voted to incorporate into a city. To mark the 40th anniversary of that incorporation, Lakewood is seeking nominations for the three categories.

Download nomination forms from the following links, or pick up copies at Lakewood's recreation centers and cultural facilities.

Trees submitted for nominations must also be sustainable in our climate, readily available for purchase and representative of what currently thrives in Lakewood.

Flowers submitted for nomination must be sustainable in our climate, drought tolerant or resistant, have showy flowers, be readily available for purchase and be low maintenance and long-lived (not an annual plant).

Songs submitted for nomination must have original music and lyrics, focus on life in Lakewood or the city since its incorporation in 1969 and have a duration of 2 ½ to 3 ½ minutes. A minimum of two verses and a refrain are suggested but not required. Accompaniment is preferred, and the music and lyrics must be submitted in written form and on a recorded CD.

Nominations will be accepted through July 2, the day before the "Lakewood: 40 and Fireworks" community celebration at Lakewood on Parade. A panel of judges will pick the winning nominations, which will be announced at the City Council meeting on Aug. 24 when a proclamation for "Incorporation Day" will be issued.
