Coordinated construction underway to address flooding and safety issues

The City of Lakewood, in conjunction with several partner agencies, has commenced construction this month on transformative infrastructure projects in the West Colfax Avenue corridor and will have a press conference to provide details and updates about this work.

PRESS CONFERENCE DETAILS

Speakers: Lakewood Mayor Wendi Strom, the city engineer for the projects and the director of the Lakewood-West Colfax Business Improvement District.

WHEN:            10:30-11:30 a.m., Thursday, March 27.

WHERE:          The Hub at 40 West Art District, 6501 W. Colfax Ave.

VISUALS:       Construction activity, project renderings and photo/video opportunity.

The coordinated construction is for the North Dry Gulch Improvement Project and West Colfax Transportation Safety Project. Together, these projects represent a major investment in Lakewood’s infrastructure to improve safety, reduce flooding and create a more vibrant and resilient West Colfax for businesses, residents and visitors.

North Dry Gulch is tackling long-standing flooding issues created before Lakewood was a city by improving the stormwater management system along West Colfax. This will address flooding issues for nearby businesses by removing the flood plain from their properties. More information about this project and construction updates are available at NorthDryGulch.com.

The West Colfax project focuses on safety improvements, with the first phase building a more continuous center median, roadway lighting, landscaping and pedestrian “Z” crossings mid-block between signalized intersections. The “Z” crossings will provide pedestrians with safe protected areas for crossing West Colfax in predictable locations where motorists can clearly see them. This is an important improvement because the eastern segment of West Colfax in Lakewood has the highest concentration of traffic injuries and deaths in the city. More information and construction updates are available at WestColfaxSafety.com.
