Lakewood employee helps rescue a woman pinned under her truck

Steve Abraham. White truck upside down at the crash site.

April 25, 2024 - Steve Abraham’s Tuesday started out normally. In the office bright and early at 6 a.m. along with his fellow golf staffers at Lakewood’s Fox Hollow Golf Course, he noticed that an issue on the #10 green and noted he’d have to get out there quickly.

But before he could check on that, a colleague came into his office, saying that as he drove into work he had seen a white truck on its back just off of Morrison Road, in an area of native grass at the edge of the course. He said there appeared to be police tape around the vehicle.

Abraham and Phil Semenchuk decided to investigate, soon finding the vehicle. The police tape ended up being a loose ratchet strap from the vehicle, so Abraham and Semenchuk were the first people to the scene.

The pair began to look inside and around the vehicle and soon found the driver, 27-year-old Rachael Hammack. She had been thrown from her seat and was pinned under the truck’s hood and entangled in some barbed wire. She had obviously been there for some time, but Abraham was able to determine she was alive and not paralyzed. He quickly radioed back for colleagues to call 911 and began extricating Hammack from the barbed wire. West Metro Fire Rescue and Lakewood Police Department personnel arrived within seven minutes of the call and took Hammack to the hospital, where she remains, having undergone surgery and hopeful of a full recovery.

Given the cold conditions and how she was stuck under the truck, it’s far from certain Hammack would have been able to survive her injuries if not for the quick thinking of Abraham, Semenchuk and others at Fox Hollow. Lakewood is fortunate to have such dedicated and selfless staff members.
