Lakewood Ranger and good Samaritans rescue swimmer
June 17, 2024 - Lakewood Park Ranger Garrett Shaw and some quick-thinking good Samaritans helped save a person from drowning at Bear Creek Lake Park’s swim beach at Big Soda Lake last weekend.
“I was able to locate a party in the water just briefly before they went underneath the water,” Shaw said. The good Samaritans, a group of friends from Green Mountain High School, acted immediately and got the swimmer to shore. Shaw performed lifesaving CPR until the West Metro Fire Rescue Department arrived on scene.

This incident is a powerful reminder of the importance of water safety. Whether you're swimming, boating, or just enjoying the water, always practice water safety by being prepared. Remember, state law requires that each person on a waterfront have a personal floatation device available to them, and children under 12 must be wearing one at all times.
“If you’re unsure about your swimming abilities or just not confident,” Shaw said, “having a personal flotation device or life jacket can certainly be beneficial.”
