Lakewood junior tennis teams shine at state championships
Aug. 28, 2024 - The Junior Team Tennis program at Lakewood Park Tennis Center is celebrating a remarkable achievement as two teams delivered standout performances at the state championships for junior girls this summer.
The Yellow Ball team, for those age 14 and under, won second place at state in only its second consecutive appearance at the championships. After finishing the season undefeated with a 7-0 record and only dropping two sets throughout the season, the team’s dedication and skills were evident on the court.
Meanwhile, the Green Ball team, for those age 12 and under, competed for the first time and made a notable impression by finishing second, which is an outstanding feat for its debut season. With a 5-2 record and having won the most games of any team in its division, the Green Ball team demonstrated significant potential and promise for future seasons.
“To see them grow as young women and learn how to be good players is just phenomenal,” said Gregory Richardson, head coach and co-founder of Lakewood Park Tennis Center’s junior program.
Both teams battled through a competitive field of more than 60 teams. Their success reflects not only the individual talents of team members, but also the strength and support of the Lakewood Park Tennis Center’s program. Located in the city’s Lakewood Park, the Tennis Center operates a full menu of programs, instruction and league play for the city at the eight-court facility.
Richardson and his wife, Christina Santino, started the program, and their leadership and active involvement, alongside the help of other parents, has been crucial in driving the initiatives of the program’s success.
“I absolutely love my players. I am so proud of them,” Richardson said.
Over the past two years, the program has grown in the number of players of all backgrounds and skill sets to build teams that exemplify a love for tennis. The expansion of the program with a new Green Ball team has attracted more players, involved more parents and continued to foster responsible tennis players.
“My wife and I are extremely proud,” Richardson said. “We hope to continue to expand our community and continue to give tennis players the opportunity to have fun while trying competitive play.”
