Citizen's Police Academy

If you think you know how policing works from binge-watching CSI and Law and Order this is the place for you.

Since 1989 the Citizens Police Academy has been bringing Lakewood residents just like you behind the scenes of the Lakewood Police Department. Each week, you will be introduced to the department’s many public safety missions including:

  • SWAT
  • Gangs
  • Narcotics
  • Vice
  • Crime scene investigation
  • Traffic and Accident Investigation
  • K-9 operations
  • The 911 system

You’ll be briefed by department officials on police training standards and ethics codes, plus daily agent routines and procedures. You will have exclusive access to aspects of policing not generally known to the public. The Academy will also provide insight and understanding of Lakewood Police agents’ around-the-clock activities and challenges as they protect and serve the citizens and businesses of our community. Each aspect of policing is presented by departmental specialists.

Graduates of the Academy may apply for rewarding volunteer positions with the department, though there is no requirement to do so. Your insights and understanding of the Lakewood Police Department may inspire you to invest your energy and unique talents in a position and on a flexible time schedule that serves your community and enriches your life. The Academy is available free of charge.
