Temporary Lane Closures on West Colfax Avenue

Temporary lanes closures have begun on West Colfax Avenue between Pierce and Lamar streets for work on two significant projects in the corridor. These projects are the North Dry Gulch Improvement Project to address flooding issues in the corridor and the West Colfax Transportation Safety Project to address traffic and pedestrian safety in the corridor.

These closures will limit left turns at intersections, and it will require the closure of through traffic on Newland. These temporary closures are expected to be in place for several months.

The lane closures are needed to conduct work on gas mains and other utilities, followed by installation of a large culvert pipe across the width of West Colfax, which will lead to additional temporary lane closures in the coming months.

Timeline of lane closures
January 2025 update: Stormwater pipe installation for the continued work on the North Dry Gulch Project will begin this month and will occur from the Lamar Pond along Newland Street, across West Colfax Avenue, and west to Pierce Street. There are multiple steps to the lane closures for this phase of construction. Please note there will be additional closures on West Colfax related to the Xcel gas main relocation for this project and the upcoming construction of the West Colfax Transportation Safety Project.

  • Currently: The northern half of Newland Street from West 14th to West Colfax avenues will remain closed through April. The westbound left turn lane is also closed.
  • January: The southern most lane, next to the curb, on eastbound West Colfax and the eastbound left turn lanes will close mid- to late-January.
  • February-March: The curb-side eastbound lane will remain closed, and medians will be removed to create an additional eastbound through-lane.
  • March-April: The two southern lanes (curb-side lane and the adjacent lane) of eastbound West Colfax will close, but two lanes will remain open for both eastbound and westbound West Colfax.
  • April-May: The traffic pattern will shift with the center two lanes of eastbound West Colfax closing, but two lanes will remain open eastbound and westbound.
  • May-July: The traffic pattern will shift again with the northern two lanes of eastbound West Colfax closing, but two lanes will remain open eastbound and westbound.

The timeline could vary depending on weather and other construction conditions.
