Construction & Demolition Recycling

Overview

An estimated 35% of all landfill waste in Colorado comes from construction and demolition activities. However, many of these materials can be recycled or reused, adding to our economy and reducing our environmental impact. The city of Lakewood Building Code requires certain construction and demolition projects to recycle specific materials.

What are the requirements?

New buildings, additions, or remodels with a total interior space over 2,500 square feet and new developments with multiple buildings with a combined total interior space over 5,000 square feet must recycle:

  • Concrete
  • Asphalt
  • Untreated wood
  • Metal
  • Cardboard

Demolition projects must recycle:

  • Concrete
  • Asphalt
  • Metal
  • Where possible, all remaining materials, such as doors, windows, cabinets, and fixtures

How to comply

  2. Complete a construction waste management plan(PDF, 183KB) or demolition waste management plan(PDF, 183KB).
  3. Submit the plan with your permit. Permits will not be issued until this is completed (see sample plan(PDF, 193KB)).
